I’VE just enjoyed a delightful day with the youngsters of Kinlochleven Primary School.
A few weeks ago two of the children wrote to me with a copy of a cracking little walking guide-book the school has produced called ‘Don’t Forget Your Wellies’, and an invitation to join them on one of their weekly Friday walks in and around Kinlochleven.
It was an invitation I couldn’t resist so I went through today and met up with the youngsters and their teacher, Fiona McSorland.
Fiona moved to Lochaber about five years ago from Lanarkshire where her school had been enjoying a successful walks programme. She brought the idea to Kinlochleven with her and last year, looking at ways the children could further their experience of walking the trails and footpaths around the village someone came up with the idea of producing a walking guide.
The children surveyed the walks, drew the maps, walked the ground and wrote the words and a terrific guide it is. It’s clear and concise with accurate maps and some drawing as well as some colour photos. It’s a handy size to pop into your pocket and it only costs £3 or 2 for £5. Could make a great Christmas present?
Anyway, today the children showed me round some of the trails and despite the rain and glowering skies I was carried along on a tide of enthusiasm. Their knowledge of the village, its landmarks and history were staggering and it was wonderful to spend time in the company of a bunch of young people who had such pride in their surroundings.
Well done Kinlochleven Primary!
Hi,Cameron, just read and enjoyed your article in Scots Mag, re “Don,t forget your Wellies.” Where can I buy the book? Been to Kinlochleven many times, would love to be taken on one the kid,s walks, when my wife and I come on our hols to Scotland in May.
What a marketing idea for some extra school funds….Guided walks?
Hi Harry,
They are a great bunch. I’d suggest you Google in Kinlochleven Primary School and I’m sure there will be a contact on the page you could get in touch with.
Hello,Cameron, thanks for your mail, sorry for late response, been away.
Sent mail,as you suggest, but must have gone to new high school nextdoor,so have phoned head teacher Mrs. Allan (very helpful lady) and she is sending me copy in post on receipt of £3.She also has agreed for my wife and I to visit her school and possibly meet her young “Authors & Sherpa,s” when we take our usual Lochaber hillwalking hol,s in May.
So looking forward
Thanks again for your input and your next article in The Scots Mag.,
